MDX USA ICE Opthalmoscope Review

Ice Opthalmoscope by MDX USA is a low budget opthalmoscope , and hence it’s affordable for those who cannot purchase the higher range voluptuous branded opthalmoscopes. I purchased one recently for about $90 or Rs 9000/-  Price – not bad . But is it still a true value for $ 90 money ? Let’s go through its features and then decide.

Opthalmoscope is powered by 2 “AA” sized cells. Rechargeable cells do not come with it.
The opthalmoscope has a good intensity illumination by a halogen-xenon bulb. Its bright ! Its too good ! There is Large circle illumination, small circle, semi circle, Fixation star illumination and finally a Green coloured /Red free filter. Ample types of illuminations. The change dial for this works pretty good but there has to be a little adjustment made for ,say, a Large circle to look really full circular you have to adjust the dial a bit so that its in proper place.

The turn ON/OFF switch on the scope is pretty good. And so is the overall build of the cells compartment as you may see:

The overall build of scope is very handy and strong. It feels solid in hands .

Now comes the performance part. As i placed cells (rechargeable ones) in the scope ad turned it on… there were many flaws/bad features that i found. I ll use the pic below to elaborate them:

 

After the pupil of my subject was fully dialted, and i saw through “1” there was  a definite ‘glow’/’glare’ – bad glow of light come from below that made the view Blurry.

There was such bright light coming through ‘2’ that it also glowed/glared to my eyes and blurred the vision/attracted attention.

The focus dial ‘3’ was so hard to be moved . Such that whole hand moved while rotating it to get clear focus of the inner of eye.

So, I had to proceed to find out the reason of Flaws in the scope and how to amend them !

------------Scope was opened.

It was tuff getting it all disassembled.

But finally after patience and little thinking i did it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Glare came from ‘1’ due to mirror surface infront . Had to take a Black coloured permanent marker and colour the EDGE of mirror black….

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The glare in 2 was there since very intense light illuminated that area . So i had to do something to make that light dim. I selected ‘sunny plast’ to stick on the slit from where light from bulb came to illuminate the dial ring.

Sunny plast bandage was cut and stuck to the slit to DIM the light falling on the dial ring. I selected this material since the temperature around bulb gets too high and this material would stand it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The ‘3’ so hard to rotate focus dial (hard to rotate since when you are focusing you dont wish your hands to go a little jerky while rotating it- you ll lose all your focus point")…… the spring and the ball making a setting for it were removed.

 

Finally , i had modified the scope such that i feel 90% satisfied using it. & i am happy to have this instrument in its low budget value.
No doubt the solid build quality of the scope helped me to make it work the way I wanted.

IN CONCLUSION : MDX USA Ice Opthalmoscope is very good piece of instrument .Its not that bad as it may look through my review, its that it was affordable enough for the value and performance it gives. I give it 6/10 .

& for my moded scope i l give it 7/10….. I recommend MDX USA to all those wanting a quick see through into eye in low budget range.
